“A breakthrough in talks has happened” – Charles Watts issues yet another big in-house Arsenal update
According to journalist Charles Watts, it has been revealed that Arsenal has a strong belief that Reiss Nelson will imminently agree to a long-term contract extension, ensuring his continued presence at the club.
Due to injuries and the outstanding performances of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, the 23-year-old Reiss Nelson has faced difficulties in securing a regular place in the Arsenal first team this season. However, whenever given the opportunity as a substitute, Nelson has delivered notable performances.
In a recent game against Bournemouth, his brief appearance saw him contribute an assist for the equalizing goal and score an exceptional winner, aiding Arsenal in a thrilling comeback. Throughout the season, Nelson has made impressive contributions off the bench, accumulating a total of six goals and assists in 18 matches across all competitions.
Initially, it seemed likely that Nelson would leave the club as his contract is set to expire this summer. However, recent developments in contract negotiations indicate that he is now inclined to extend his stay at Arsenal.
During a discussion on his YouTube channel, Charles Watts disclosed that there is a growing sense of assurance within the club regarding Reiss Nelson’s intention to pledge his future to Mikel Arteta’s team.
“All signs are that this is going to be a done deal with Reiss Nelson and his contract, after rejecting a few previous offers,” he stated.
“A breakthrough in talks has happened and people that I’m speaking to at Arsenal think this is going to happen. Until it’s signed, until it’s done, you never know something can change and other clubs can come in and wave a big contract offer under his nose and he could decide to go elsewhere.
“But at the moment there is a lot of positivity that Reiss Nelson will sign his new contract, we’re just waiting for it to be done and announced.”
What are Arsenal’s aims for Nelson?
With Bukayo Saka featuring in every league game last season, it is likely that Reiss Nelson will be utilized as rotational cover for the talented English winger as Arsenal make their return to the Champions League.
This would provide the team with depth and options in the attacking positions, ensuring adequate rest and competition for Saka throughout the demanding fixtures of European competition.
Retaining Reiss Nelson, even with a potential wage increase, would be more financially prudent for Arsenal compared to having to find a replacement for him in the event of losing him on a free transfer. Given that Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are established as the preferred first-choice options on the wings, Nelson’s role would likely involve providing squad depth and competition.
Mikel Arteta’s recent description of Nelson as “important” suggests that the club values his contributions and sees him as part of their plans. It is unlikely that Nelson would commit his future to the club without receiving assurances regarding his playing time.
Previously hailed as one of the top talents in Arsenal’s academy, Nelson experienced challenges in recent seasons and had loan spells away from the club. However, it now appears that he is in a favorable position to realize his potential within the team.
