Arsenal Best Attacking Midfielders Of The Premier League Era
The Premier League era has seen Arsenal Football Club’s identity shaped by a tradition of acquiring some of the finest attacking midfielders worldwide.
During Arsene Wenger’s tenure, the team had an abundance of inventive attacking midfielders.
This tradition continues to this day, with top-tier players like Emile Smith Rowe, Leandro Trossard, and another player we’ll discuss shortly being part of the club’s DNA.
Martin Odegaard
Martin Odegaard is the only player from the aforementioned list currently on Arsenal’s roster and certainly deserves to be mentioned. He has made significant strides in his performance this year, showcasing exceptional ball control and an insatiable work ethic.
Although he may typically operate in a deeper position than some of the other players on the list, when utilized as an attacking midfielder, he can pose a considerable threat to opposing defenders. Despite being previously hailed as a potential world-class player, Odegaard has yet to reach that level, but he appears to be improving with every game he plays.
Mesut Ozil
When Mesut Ozil transferred to Arsenal from Real Madrid, it caused quite a stir. Though some felt that he struggled to adapt to the fast-paced and physical nature of the Premier League, his passing skills were undeniable.
Arsenal fans dubbed him the “Assist King” for good reason – his passing range was simply phenomenal, arguably the best in the history of the Premier League.
Despite his occasional lack of effort, he was a wizard on the ball when he had enough space to showcase his abilities and orchestrate the team’s movements.
Robert Pires
Although Robert Pires was primarily deployed on the wings, his talent for cutting inside and producing opportunities with his exquisite skills made him an incredibly successful attacking midfielder.
Beyond his time at Arsenal, Pires played for several other prestigious clubs, such as Marseille, Villareal, and a short period at Aston Villa.
Unfortunately, some fans may only recall his unsuccessful “fake-out” penalty attempt with Thierry Henry, but this is a tremendous disservice to Pires, who was arguably one of the most aesthetically pleasing players to watch at Arsenal.
Cesc Fabregas
Although some Arsenal supporters may not be pleased to see Cesc Fabregas on this list due to his departure to their bitter rivals Chelsea, it’s hard to deny the exceptional talent of the Spanish midfielder.
He possessed remarkable ball control and passing ability, which were nearly unparalleled.
Fabregas made his debut for Arsenal at the young age of 16 and didn’t seem overwhelmed by the experience.
While his decision to leave the Gunners for Chelsea may have tarnished his legacy among some fans, it’s impossible to ignore the magnitude of his midfield skills.
Dennis Bergkamp
Dennis Bergkamp is arguably one of the greatest players in Premier League history and is certainly within the top three, if not the greatest of all time.
His partnership with Thierry Henry is widely regarded as one of the most legendary in football history. Bergkamp possessed an incredible range of skills – he was a master of creating chances for others and also capable of scoring goals himself.
Throughout his career at Arsenal, Bergkamp scored an impressive 87 goals in 315 games. He was a crucial member of the Invincibles team and his departure left a significant void that was never fully filled. It’s hard to imagine a player who could ever truly replace the extraordinary talents of Dennis Bergkamp.
