Arsenal can fulfil Dominik Szoboszlai’s transfer dream and finally complete two-year plan
There have been numerous names associated with Arsenal over the years, but one of the most well-known in recent times is Dominik Szoboszlai.
The talented player, who previously played for Red Bull Salzburg, caught the attention of the Gunners for a while. However, in January 2021, RB Leipzig managed to secure the services of the Hungarian midfielder, finalizing the agreement in the middle of the previous month.
During the same January transfer window, Arsenal went on to sign Martin Odegaard on loan, eventually making the deal permanent in the following summer. Additionally, Fabio Vieira, a Portuguese youth international, has also joined the club since then, although he has faced some difficulties in adapting.
According to football.london, it is understood that Arsenal are still interested in signing an attacking midfielder this summer. Dominik Szoboszlai is seen as a suitable candidate for this role. Although he has primarily played on the flanks during his time at Leipzig, he would still offer Mikel Arteta additional choices and flexibility in the team.
In an intriguing development, despite spending only 18 months in the Bundesliga, Szoboszlai has expressed his desire to move on to the next level. During an interview with the Hungarian outlet Index, he discussed the importance of avoiding any future regrets when reflecting on his career.
“If there is interest, I will consider it, not because I don’t have a good time in Leipzig, but because I have always been interested in challenges,” he said. “On one side of the scale is a good Leipzig, with a coach who trusts me and teammates who accept me and also believe in me.
“No footballer can wish for more than that. This is quite an extra situation.
“At the same time, on the other side, there is the question, if I can now take a step towards Europe’s top five or six clubs, should I say no to the challenge? I’ve never been that type!
“I am in a very good position, as I can play in a fantastic club. However, I don’t want 15 years from now to look back on my career as if I didn’t get the most out of it.”
With their strong performance against Manchester City this season and their qualification for the Champions League in the upcoming season, Arsenal could make a case for being among the top five or six clubs in 2023. The Gunners can undoubtedly provide Szoboszlai with a step up from Leipzig, and their previous interest in him suggests that there is still a strong desire to pursue him.
Szoboszlai’s impressive record of nine goals and thirteen assists this season clearly showcases the quality he would bring to Arsenal for the next season. However, it is expected that his price tag will be significantly higher than the approximately £20 million that RB Leipzig paid for him in 2021.
