Arsenal defender who has never played under Mikel Arteta has just won Player of the Season award out on loan

Auston Trusty, a central defender from the United States, was named the Supporters’ Player of the Season at Birmingham City despite never having played for Arsenal during Mikel Arteta’s tenure.

Trusty signed with the Gunners in January 2022 from Colorado Rapids of the MLS but was loaned back to his former American team for the remainder of the season.

During the beginning of the 2022-23 season, Auston Trusty was loaned to Birmingham City, a team in the English Championship.

He has since played in 47 matches for the club, which includes various competitions, and helped them keep 13 clean sheets. His impressive performance led to him being named the Supporters’ Player of the Season for the club.

Following the receipt of the award, Auston Trusty expressed his excitement and gratitude by sharing a celebratory message on social media. On Twitter, he wrote:

“Supporters Player of the Season. Thank you to the club and fans that have made Birmingham feel like home since day one. I am so honored and grateful.”

In March of this year, Auston Trusty made his first appearance for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) in their game against Grenada, where they won by a score of 7-1.

“It’s been really, really awesome” – Arsenal loanee Auston Trusty recently spoke about playing in Europe

Although Auston Trusty, who is currently on loan from Arsenal, has extensive experience playing in the United States and the MLS, he had no prior experience playing football in Europe before joining Birmingham City. His loan spell at Birmingham provided him with his first opportunity to play in the continent.

Recently, Trusty shared his thoughts on his first season in Europe. The defender spoke via Arsenal’s official website, where he said:

“It’s my first year over here in Europe and first time on loan, but I didn’t come here thinking this is just for a season, I came here thinking I want to make my mark on an organisation. I’m thankful that I have been perceived this way by the fans. It’s been really, really awesome.”

“Coming from the US I knew I would have to prove myself. I really was an unproven European player, I had to prove that I can hold my ground and do my job. Coming to the Championship and a team like Birmingham City that allowed me to show that was the best-case scenario.”

It is uncertain whether Auston Trusty’s impressive performances on loan will convince Mikel Arteta to give him an opportunity to play for Arsenal’s first team next season.

However, considering that Arsenal will be competing in the UEFA Champions League next season, they will require a more extensive pool of talented players to handle the demanding schedule.
