Arsenal equal Premier League club record in Crystal Palace win
Arsenal achieved a noteworthy milestone by defeating Crystal Palace 5-0 in today’s Premier League match, matching a club record. This decisive victory equals their largest-ever London derby win in the Premier League.
The Gunners had previously achieved such a comprehensive triumph against a fellow London club only once before, back in 1998 when they routed Wimbledon 5-0.
This memorable win occurred late in the 1997-98 season, a campaign that culminated in Arsenal securing the Premier League title with a one-point lead over Manchester United.
In this latest triumph, Mikel Arteta’s team demonstrated its significance by narrowing the gap with the league leaders.
With Liverpool set to face Bournemouth on Sunday, Arsenal’s win places them just two points behind the Premier League summit. Currently occupying the third position, they trail Manchester City only on goal difference.
The first half of the match at the Emirates showcased Gabriel Magalhaes, with the central defender not only opening the scoring but also having his second goal eventually credited as a Dean Henderson own goal.
Palace paid a harsh price for slightly opening up in the second half, as Arsenal capitalized on three clinical counterattacks. Leandro Trossard extended the lead to 3-0, and substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored twice in stoppage time.
Although under-fire striker Gabriel Jesus didn’t find the net, he contributed a fine assist for Trossard’s well-taken goal in the second half, making it a flawless day for Arsenal.
After enduring four winless home games against the Eagles, Arsenal has now secured consecutive victories at the Emirates against Crystal Palace, boasting an aggregate score of 9-1.
This win completes a league double for Arsenal over Palace, following their earlier 1-0 victory at Selhurst Park on the second weekend of the season.
While London derbies posed challenges for Arsenal this season, with home draws against Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur and a loss to West Ham United in their final 2023 home game, they have an opportunity for redemption. Despite losses to Fulham on New Year’s Eve and West Ham in the EFL Cup, the Gunners have a chance to make amends when they visit the London Stadium in early February.
