Arsenal eye up shock move for 26-year-old player from relegation threatened Premier League club
According to Football Insider, it is reported that Arsenal is showing interest in signing Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, which would be an unexpected move.
The Gunners are monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation closely and are prepared to make a lower-priced offer for him if Everton drops down to a lower league this season.
It has been reported that Mikel Arteta is fond of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s skills, despite the player’s injury problems in the past few years.
The striker has been absent for 48 of Everton’s first-team games since the 2016/17 season due to injuries.
However, when he has been fit, Calvert-Lewin has been able to score goals, finding the back of the net 59 times in 203 matches across all competitions for the Toffees.
Arsenal surprise move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin
As of April 2, 2023, Arsenal is leading the Premier League title race, sitting eight points ahead of the defending champions Manchester City, who have one game in hand. On April 1, Arsenal defeated Leeds United 4-1, which helped them solidify their position at the top of the league table.
Reportedly, Arsenal is considered the leading candidate to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin if Everton gets relegated this season, although other Premier League clubs may also show interest in him.
In the current Premier League season, Calvert-Lewin has scored only one goal and has played for a total of 735 minutes. In the previous season, he scored five goals in 17 appearances in all competitions.
Everton is currently positioned just one point above the Premier League’s relegation zone, and if they are demoted to a lower league, they would need to reduce their wage bill.
Although Sean Dyche considers Calvert-Lewin a critical player at Everton, he acknowledges that the striker would likely be one of the first to depart if the club suffers relegation.
Arsenal’s interest in Calvert-Lewin is noteworthy, particularly given their requirement for a reliable goalscorer. While it remains to be seen whether Everton will avoid relegation, the Gunners could take advantage of the Toffees’ precarious situation and potentially sign the 26-year-old on a bargain deal.
