Arsenal handed Pedro Neto transfer boost as Wolves worry emerge
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ winger, Pedro Neto, was strongly associated with a transfer to Arsenal over the summer transfer window.
However, the move didn’t happen before the window closed.
Nevertheless, ongoing rumors persist, with Fabrizio Romano, a renowned transfer expert, suggesting that other clubs might pursue the Portugal international next year.
According to journalist Tim Spiers, the financial challenges faced by Wolves could potentially lead to manager Gary O’Neil’s team having to part ways with Neto if a substantial offer is made.
“Wolves had this huge financial issue in the summer and they had to ship out £100million worth of players and they did spend a bit too (on new players),” Spiers told The Athletic Totally Football Show.
“From what I am told they aren’t completely out the woods on that front (FFP), so if Arsenal or a huge club come in with a huge bid for Neto they would have to look at it pretty closely. He is a player destined for a Champions League club and Wolves’ financial position perhaps means that will be sooner rather than later.”
Neto has had an immensely prosperous beginning to the 2023/24 season, topping the Premier League’s assist rankings by contributing to seven goals for his teammates in the initial 10 matches.
Despite this, Wolves’ manager, O’Neil, has consistently maintained his stance that the 23-year-old winger has a future at Molineux for the long term.
“He’s been incredible, Jamie [Carragher],” the former Bournemouth head coach told Sky Sports last week. “And not just – he has massive quality as you can see [here in the win against Manchester City] and you see every week; the way he trains and the way he’s been buying into everything I’ve asked of him in possession, out of possession; the way he drives to improve, the way he sets standards.
“He’s been incredible.” The ex-Bournemouth manager also remained coy when asked about Neto’s future with Wolves, claiming that the talented wideman is happy at Molineux.
“He’s incredibly happy at Wolves,” O’Neil added. “He’s enjoying his football, he’s rediscovered some fantastic form.
“He’d had a tough couple of years with injury and form, and he’s performing at his best. So he’s incredibly settled, happy at the club, and we’re going to try and help him achieve some big things while he’s here.”
