Arsenal loanee ‘could play for Real Madrid or Barcelona’ to hand Arteta and Edu transfer windfall
According to the statements made by Marseille’s manager Igor Tudor, Arsenal may have the opportunity to earn a significant amount of money from Nuno Tavares if they decide to sell him, as he believes the left-back has the capability to join top football clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Nuno Tavares is currently on loan at Marseille for the entire season, where he has mostly played as a wing-back in Ligue 1. During his time at the French club, he has impressed with his attacking skills, scoring six goals.
Tavares had a somewhat inconsistent first season at Arsenal, where he was signed from Benfica for £7 million in the summer of 2021. As a result, Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta decided that Tavares should continue his development through a loan spell.
However, Tavares has caught the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs. During a press conference on Thursday, Marseille’s manager Igor Tudor praised the 23-year-old’s potential and said that although he still has some way to go, Tavares has the capability to play for some of the best clubs in La Liga, such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, or even Manchester City in the future.
Tudor said: “He’s still a young player. He’s got fantastic physical capacities. He’s got an outstanding ability to run.
“He could play at Real, at Barca, at Manchester City… He still needs to grow and progress, we talk a lot to him.
“He’s been very important to us this season. He’s scored a few goals, which isn’t that common at his position. What’s important is the way we finish the season. He can change games when he’s in form.”
When Oleksandr Zinchenko joined Arsenal last summer, Nuno Tavares became the third-choice left-back for Mikel Arteta. However, there is uncertainty surrounding Kieran Tierney’s future at the club, with Newcastle reportedly showing interest in the player.
In February, Tavares stated that he was enjoying his time at Marseille, but discussions about his future won’t take place until the summer.
He said: “Everyone knows that I still have two years left with Arsenal on my contract. We’ll finish the season.
“I’m here until the end of the season to reach our objectives with Marseille. I can’t tell you much more.
“I feel very good here, with these players, this manager. We get along really well. At the end of the season, I will return to Arsenal. I can’t say much more.”
