Arsenal reach agreement to sign Barcelona defender Laia Codina

Arsenal has come to an agreement to secure the services of Laia Codina, a defender from Barcelona.

Following the Women’s World Cup, it is anticipated that she will make her way to London.

Codina, aged 23, is a member of the Spanish squad that has progressed to the final of the tournament and is set to compete against England on Sunday at 11:00 BST.

Having been on the sidelines, Codina witnessed Barcelona secure their second Women’s Champions League title in June.

In the previous season, Arsenal clinched the third spot in the Women’s Super League, thereby earning a qualification for European competitions.

Codina has been a starter in Spain’s three knockout stage matches during the Women’s World Cup, even managing to score in the round of 16 victory over Switzerland.

Notably, Arsenal has already made several signings, including England striker Alessia Russo on a free transfer, defender Amanda Ilestedt from Paris St-Germain, and striker Cloe Lacasse from Benfica.

Jonas Eidevall’s intention to reinforce the central defense of the team is no secret, especially with Rafaelle’s departure and Leah Williamson’s extended absence due to an ACL injury.

To address this, Eidevall has already secured the signature of Swedish defender Amanda Ilestedt and is now in the process of acquiring another addition.

The inclusion of Codina would undoubtedly enhance Arsenal’s roster. Her presence would infuse a winning mindset within the team.

Despite being only 23 years old, she has already amassed an impressive collection of championship medals. Starting from 2019, Codina has played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s triumphs, aiding the club in securing three Liga F titles.

Additionally, she has contributed to victories in the Spanish Cup, the Super Cup, and has played a crucial role in clinching two Champions League titles for the club.
