Arsenal sign 23 year-old World Cup-winning defender from Barcelona

On Tuesday, Arsenal announced the acquisition of Laia Codina, the Spanish defender who achieved World Cup victory, from Barcelona.

Aged 23, Codina played a key role in Spain’s World Cup triumph, featuring in all four of their knockout matches, including the final against England where they secured a 1-0 victory.

With seven international caps to her name, Codina primarily operates as a centre back.

Her club career includes 32 appearances for Barcelona since her arrival in 2019, during which she clinched two Champions League titles and three LaLiga championships.

Additionally, Codina had a loan spell at AC Milan during the 2021-22 season, playing 14 matches for the team.

“Laia is a world-class defender and I’m delighted to be working with her here at Arsenal,” coach Jonas Eidevall said.

“She has a great mix of technical ability and physical presence and we believe this will allow her to adapt to our style here quickly.

“She has considerable experience of playing at the highest level and winning trophies, so I’m confident that she will be an excellent addition to our squad moving forward.”

Arsenal, who finished third in the league last year, begin their new campaign at home to Liverpool on Oct. 1.
