Arsenal tell Aaron Ramsdale they will let him leave in summer
Reportedly, Arsenal has communicated to goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is currently out of favor, that they will permit his departure at the end of the season.
This comes amid new interest from Chelsea and Newcastle United. As per 90min, Arsenal has no intentions of approving Ramsdale’s exit during the upcoming January transfer window, despite Chelsea and Newcastle United expressing interest in acquiring the goalkeeper.
Ramsdale joined Arsenal in August 2021 from Sheffield United and has played a significant role for the Gunners, making 86 appearances in various competitions and securing an impressive 32 clean sheets.
He became a regular member of the England squad under Gareth Southgate and participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
However, the 25-year-old has faced a tumultuous season in North London, featuring in only eight matches despite being a consistent starter in the previous two campaigns.
David Raya has taken over as Arsenal’s No. 1 goalkeeper after being loaned from Brentford in the summer, contrary to initial expectations that manager Mikel Arteta would rotate between Ramsdale and Raya for the starting position.
Ramsdale was given a rare start against Brentford over the weekend, managing to keep a clean sheet but making some errors during the game.
This has added to the uncertainty surrounding his future, and reportedly, Ramsdale is open to the idea of leaving Arsenal to secure more playing time elsewhere.
Given Aaron Ramsdale’s impressive performance as one of the top goalkeepers in the league last season, interest in the 25-year-old has surged. Wolves, among several Premier League clubs in the lower half of the table, are keen on securing Ramsdale as a potential replacement for their current No. 1, Jose Sa, who is attracting attention from Saudi Pro League clubs.
Chelsea is also in the mix for Ramsdale, as manager Mauricio Pochettino seeks competition for current goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
However, they face competition, and Newcastle is another potential destination for the goalkeeper.
Eddie Howe, who previously signed Ramsdale during his time at Bournemouth, holds admiration for the 25-year-old. While Newcastle is on an upward trajectory, Ramsdale would face competition for a starting spot from compatriot Nick Pope.
Despite Ramsdale’s advantage in distribution skills, neither Newcastle nor Chelsea is looking to make a move for him in the upcoming transfer window.
Ramsdale remains under contract with Arsenal until 2026, with the option for an extra year.
With Euro 2024 approaching, he is likely unwilling to spend the majority of the 2023–24 campaign on the bench.
However, it appears that Ramsdale’s hopes of leaving the club may be dashed.
Although the player might push for an exit, Arsenal seems reluctant to sell him in January.
At this stage, a departure in the summer seems more likely for the talented goalkeeper.
