Arsenal finally broke their winless streak against Manchester City, clinching a 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

The match remained scoreless until Gabriel Martinelli, who came on as a substitute, scored the decisive goal for the home team. Gary Neville expressed that this victory was a significant moment for Arsenal at the Emirates.

Following their strong title challenge last season, Gary Neville suggested that Mikel Arteta’s team may not have a similar opportunity this season unless they acquire their new £105 million signing, Declan Rice.

“They will not win the league if they don’t have the two centre backs and Rice.”

Neville was pleased with the displays of Gabriel and William Saliba, as well as midfielder Declan Rice. However, he did express concern about David Raya’s shaky beginning in the Gunners’ match against City.

“He’s averted a little bit of a crisis there. That could have been a real problem.”

Arsenal hadn’t defeated Manchester City in the Premier League since 2015, making today’s victory a significant and historic three points for the North London team.

“The atmosphere here is special. I’ve criticised them for over-celebrating, not today. That’s a big moment for them. They had to beat Manchester City today.” Neville said.

“No Rodri, no De Bruyne. You’ll never get a better chance. Beaten at Wolves last week. And it was scruffy, it went 12 rounds. But they’ve got through it. A long, long way to go. But it’ll give them so much confidence.

Former Arsenal star and previously-retired Theo Walcott acknowledged the importance of the game. Walcott said: “We were saying at the start of today, how important this was. Arsenal today, we’ve got to focus on Arsenal.

“As a defensive unit, they were very organised. The attacking, they seemed to have forgotten to do that in the week maybe! But Mikel [Arteta] won’t care. It’s a fantastic result. That just shows how important that victory is right now.

“When it comes down to fine margins at the end of the season, every point in the early stage of the season always matters. This is a big moment, not just for Arsenal but for the Premier League as well. Manchester City are beatable.

Micah Richards added: “I think it’s just for their confidence. Looking back to last season, Manchester City, they’re thinking that’s a game you want to get something from.

“Today, Arsenal would probably have been happy with the draw, but they got the three points.

“I don’t think Arsenal were at their very best today but the way they approached the game was definitely more intelligent. You know Man City are going to dominate the ball but I just thought they defended well.”
