Atletico Madrid make enquiry for reported Arsenal target
Atletico Madrid has expressed interest in Wilfried Zaha, while the previously speculated possibility of him joining Arsenal on a free transfer seems to be losing momentum.
According to Sami Mokbel’s report in the Daily Mail, Atletico Madrid has initiated contact to explore the possibility of signing Wilfried Zaha. Zaha currently has until the end of June to make a decision on Crystal Palace’s latest contract offer, which entails a substantial weekly salary of approximately £200,000.
Although Zaha is giving careful thought to the offer, he is also considering the allure of playing in the UEFA Champions League with Atletico Madrid.
Despite receiving offers from non-European destinations such as Saudi Arabia, Wilfried Zaha is leaning towards a move to either La Liga or remaining in the Premier League. This preference stems from his strong desire to continue competing at the highest level of professional football.
In April, there were reports linking Arsenal to a potential signing of Wilfried Zaha once his contract with Crystal Palace expired. RMC Sport stated that Arsenal, Chelsea, and Marseille were among the interested clubs, with the Premier League clubs considered favorites due to financial challenges faced by Marseille.
The Daily Mail suggested that Arsenal could become a potential suitor if Zaha’s contract extension negotiations with Palace did not progress as expected, especially considering the player’s strong desire to compete in European competitions.
A free transfer move was also seen as a possibility, allowing Arsenal to allocate funds towards strengthening other key positions, such as midfield.
In recent weeks, the links between Arsenal and Wilfried Zaha have diminished. Initially, reports suggested that Arsenal had identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby as their primary target for a wide forward position.
Furthermore, with news of Reiss Nelson potentially extending his contract with Arsenal, the pursuit of a new wide forward seemed to take a back seat for the club.
At the moment, it appears that Atletico Madrid is the frontrunner to secure the services of Zaha, the Ivory Coast international.
