‘Awful’: Arsenal told they have made one of the worst signings in PL history
Darren Bent was talking about the Premier League’s worst signings on talkSPORT and, as expected, Nicolas Pepe was mentioned. While discussing the idea that Harry Maguire could be the league’s worst value for money signing, Bent realized that many of the high-priced signings in the Premier League have not been successful.
He pointed out that players like Romelu Lukaku and Jadon Sancho have not worked out, and he described the signing of Pepe for £72m as terrible.
Pepe one of the worst signings
Yes, Darren Bent talked about Nicolas Pepe and some of the worst signings in the Premier League in recent years during his discussion on talkSPORT.
“I said something and I thought I was being harsh when I said he would be the worst value for money signing in Premier League history. Transfers over £70m don’t work out well, Lukaku hasn’t worked, Sancho hasn’t worked, the only two are Alisson and Van Dijk off the top of my head. Pepe, £72m, awful,” Bent said.
While the signing of Nicolas Pepe for such a large sum of money was definitely not a good decision, the emergence of Bukayo Saka has made it seem even worse.
Had Saka not come through the academy at around the same time as Pepe was signed, the criticism towards Pepe might not have been as severe, and he could have still been a regular player in the Arsenal team.
However, the fact that Pepe was immediately outperformed by a young academy graduate did not bode well for him, and his performances have not improved since then.
While Pepe is undoubtedly one of Arsenal’s worst signings, it may be an exaggeration to consider him one of the worst signings in Premier League history, given some of the poor signings that have been made in recent years.
