Arsenal’s defender, Ben White, has expressed his preference regarding his playing position.

Initially stationed in the heart of Arsenal’s defense alongside Gabriel Magalhaes during his debut season, White’s role shifted to right-back with the emergence of William Saliba last season.

Despite this change, the 26-year-old swiftly adapted to the new position and has since become Mikel Arteta’s favored choice for the role.

His partnership with winger Bukayo Saka has been particularly fruitful, with White acknowledging Saka’s contribution to his performance.

However, White’s own abilities should not be overlooked; he maintains defensive solidity while actively supporting attacking plays and providing incisive passes to teammates like Saka and Martin Odegaard.

Arteta holds White in high regard, considering him “crucial” to his plans. Former Arsenal teammate Rob Holding has also praised White’s resilience, labeling him a “mentality monster” for his ability to persevere through pain and injury.

White has recently provided insight into his transition to right-back when queried about his preferred position on the field. Speaking to the club’s official website, the ex-Brighton and Hove Albion player remarked, “I’m not too bothered. I’ve played both for quite a while so it’s nice to be able to play in a few positions. Whenever I do play, I want to do my best for the team. That’s my aim. It’s helped me throughout my career and maybe got me more games than I deserved!”

Arteta will find satisfaction in White’s steadfast attitude, knowing he consistently puts forth his best effort regardless of the task. It’s evident that White’s main focus is securing his spot in the team, and this mindset has proven successful as he’s been a regular starter since joining the Emirates Stadium in 2021.

Barring any injuries, he’ll likely remain a crucial player for the Gunners throughout the season. With Timber sidelined and Tomiyasu dealing with fitness issues during his absence for the Asia Cup with Japan, White’s fitness becomes increasingly crucial.
