Chelsea to beat Arsenal to January Ivan Toney transfer?

Former Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson believes that Chelsea should prioritize signing Ivan Toney over Arsenal.

The striker is a target for both London clubs, and Johnson thinks that Chelsea has a better chance of securing his signature at a price lower than what Brentford is demanding.

Toney’s suspension, stemming from a violation of the FA’s betting regulations, continues until mid-January.

Despite this, Brentford has remained supportive, expressing the desire for him to remain with the team until at least the season’s end.

However, his contract with the west London club will expire in just over 18 months, necessitating a forthcoming decision about his future. Arsenal is reportedly eyeing Toney as their primary target for a striker.

Johnson, on the other hand, believes that Chelsea is in more urgent need of the English forward. He also suggests that Toney may be better suited to Mauricio Pochettino’s playing style than that of Mikel Arteta.

Johnson told Betfred: “I believe Chelsea need him more and he would suit the way they play. Chelsea are clearly planning for the future and they’re continuing to build, but Arsenal are competing right now so it all depends on who Ivan believes will be competing for trophies more in the next five years.”

Brentford has set a hefty price tag of £100 million for Toney’s potential departure in January.

The 27-year-old striker has showcased an impressive record, scoring 35 goals in 66 Premier League appearances since Brentford’s promotion to the top flight in 2021.

Johnson believes that Toney’s value hasn’t diminished due to his suspension. However, he expresses skepticism about the feasibility of an asking price around £100 million, considering it to be an ambitious figure. He suggests that Brentford might be testing the waters to see what they can secure in negotiations.

He added: “It’s probably a case that that’s what they’re hoping for, as opposed to what they’ll actually get for Ivan. Brentford know that they’re only going to get one chance to sell Ivan Toney and they will want to receive as much as they possibly can for him.

“I don’t think his price will drop too much because of the ban because it’s not as if Ivan’s been injured for the past six months. If it was an injury we were talking about, then Brentford surely couldn’t demand such a fee for Ivan.

“Once Ivan is match fit, then there will be no problems going forward but I still believe that £80m to £100m is too much for him anyway.”
