Arsenal supporters who have memories of Sokratis Papastathopoulos might find it surprising to learn that he is currently being associated with Bayern Munich.

It’s being reported by the German newspaper Focus that Sokratis Papastathopoulos might make an unexpected switch to Bayern Munich, nearly three years after Arsenal terminated his contract.

The reason for this potential move, as per Focus, is Bayern’s recent defensive crisis.

Injuries have been piling up, particularly with Benjamin Pavard’s transfer to Inter Milan.

Matthijs de Ligt is sidelined with a knee injury, and Dayot Upamecano has suffered a thigh injury, which has led Bayern to contemplate the possibility of signing a free agent.

Former Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos wanted by Bayern Munich

Before Dayot Upamecano’s injury, Bayern Munich had Jerome Boateng in training, but they ultimately decided not to offer him a contract at the Allianz Arena. This decision leaves Bayern in a situation where they need to consider potential signings outside of the transfer window.

Now, it is being suggested that Bayern might make a move to acquire Sokratis on a free transfer, especially due to his prior relationship with their manager, Thomas Tuchel. Sokratis and Tuchel had previously collaborated at Borussia Dortmund from 2015 to 2017, during which the defender made 81 appearances.

Focus reports that Tuchel has a strong appreciation for Sokratis’s “tireless commitment” and could potentially orchestrate a reunion at Bayern through a free transfer.

The potential transfer of Sokratis to Bayern Munich at the age of 35 is likely to bewilder Arsenal fans.

Arsenal had terminated Sokratis’s contract back in January 2021, as he failed to impress their manager, Mikel Arteta.

Following his departure from Arsenal, Sokratis joined Olympiacos, where he managed to secure two league titles before leaving at the conclusion of the previous season.

For Arsenal supporters, the notion of Sokratis possibly joining one of Europe’s top clubs would have been quite unexpected.

Now, with Bayern considering this move, it raises the possibility that Sokratis could, in an astonishing turn of events, end up facing Arsenal in the knockout stages of the Champions League if the stars align.
