Ex-Arsenal player Mesut Ozil‘ in line for shock international team manager job ’just six months after quitting football

Former Arsenal player Mesut Ozil could make a surprising comeback to football, with reports suggesting that he might return to the sport just six months after announcing his retirement.

German publication Bild has stated that there are plans for Ozil to take on a boardroom position as the general manager of a Turkish team.

Ozil’s potential connection to this job opportunity arises in the aftermath of the Turkish national team’s decision to dismiss Stefan Kuntz from his managerial position following a 4-2 loss to Japan.

The individual responsible for bringing Ozil into consideration is Turkish midfield icon Hamit Altintop, who currently holds the role of sporting director. Ozil could potentially step into this role as Altintop’s successor.

It is reported that the association is considering former Germany manager Joachim Low as Kuntz’s replacement, and Ozil may be appointed to oversee preparations for both the Euros and World Cup.

Kuntz’s dismissal was primarily due to a series of disappointing results and a falling out with Turkey’s star player, Hakan Calhanoglu.

Rumors of Altintop’s job being in jeopardy have been circulating since as far back as June, as reported by Bild. Turkey’s recent international results, particularly the 1-1 draw with Armenia and the aforementioned 4-2 defeat to Japan, have only exacerbated the uncertainty surrounding Altintop’s future.

If Ozil were to make a swift return to football after his retirement announcement in March, it would undoubtedly come as a surprising move. His most recent club was Istanbul Basaksehir, following his departure from Arsenal to join Fenerbahce in 2020.

Unfortunately, injuries hampered his ability to recapture the stellar form he displayed earlier in his career.

In 2022, he became a part of Basaksehir but decided to end his career after only playing in seven matches for the team.

He said in a lengthy social media statement about his retirement: “Hello everyone, After thoughtful consideration I’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football.

“I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity. But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football.

“It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions. I want to thank my clubs – Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahce, Basaksehir and the coaches who supported me, plus team-mates who have become friends.

“Special thanks must go to my family members and my closest friends. They have been a part of my journey from day one and have given me so much love and support, through the good times and the bad.

“Thank you to all my fans who have shown me so much love no matter the circumstances and no matter which club I was representing.

“Now I’m looking forward to everything that is in front of me with my beautiful wife, Amine, and my two beautiful daughters, Eda and Ela – but you can be sure that you will hear from me from time to time on my social media channels. See you soon, Mesut!”

It appears that Ozil might be making a return to the world of football sooner than we initially anticipated.
