Fabrizio Romano gives update on Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi
Arsenal is actively seeking a midfielder during the January transfer window, but their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad may not yield positive results.
Mikel Arteta has had his eye on Zubimendi for quite some time, given the midfielder’s outstanding performances in both La Liga and the Champions League this season.
The persistent injury issues with Thomas Partey have intensified Arsenal’s need for midfield reinforcement, and Zubimendi appears to be a potential solution.
Despite the underwhelming performance of Kai Havertz since his summer transfer from Chelsea, Zubimendi’s acquisition could address Arsenal’s midfield challenges.
However, Fabrizio Romano suggests that Arsenal might encounter difficulties if they attempt to secure Zubimendi’s services in the winter transfer window.

According to Romano’s Daily Briefing, despite Arsenal’s keen interest in the Spanish midfielder, Zubimendi currently has no intention of leaving Real Sociedad during the January transfer window.
“Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is another player really appreciated by Mikel Arteta, and he looks perfect for their project, but from what I’m hearing, the player is very happy at his current club and not thinking about moving at the moment,” Romano claimed.
“He also has a €60m release clause, so is another target who wouldn’t come cheap.”
Why do Arsenal want Zubimendi?
The 24-year-old has been a standout performer for Real Sociedad in recent years, playing a crucial role in their qualification for the Champions League last season, marking their return to the competition after a decade. Zubimendi has demonstrated versatility, excelling both as a deep-lying midfielder and in more advanced positions on the pitch.
In recent matches, Declan Rice has taken up the role of a number eight, while Jorginho occupies the base of the midfield. Zubimendi is being considered as a potential long-term replacement for the Italian midfielder. Barcelona manager Xavi has previously lauded Zubimendi, describing him as “extraordinary,” and it’s noted that Barcelona also holds an interest in the player.
However, acquiring Zubimendi won’t come cheap, as he has a release clause of £53 million. Real Sociedad’s progress to the Champions League knockout stages further complicates any potential deal. Despite the challenges, securing Zubimendi could prove to be an excellent addition in the future, forming a formidable midfield trio alongside Rice and Martin Odegaard.
