Gabriel could be handed new role at Arsenal as ‘interesting moment’ spotted in Brighton loss

Gabriel Magalhaes may be assigned a new role at Arsenal in the upcoming season following a noteworthy incident during the Gunners’ loss to Brighton.

Arsenal’s aspirations for the title were practically extinguished on Sunday, as they suffered a disheartening 3-0 defeat against Brighton at their home ground, the Emirates. In all honesty, considering the circumstances, it was a subpar performance by Mikel Arteta’s team, with the Seagulls deservedly emerging as winners.

Earlier in the day, Manchester City convincingly defeated Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points, with a game in hand over Arsenal.

However, amidst the commotion, there was an unnoticed “interesting moment” at the Emirates that could indicate forthcoming changes within the club.

What happened?

Journalist  Kaya Kaynak observed an interesting occurrence during a match: after Martin Odegaard was substituted, Gabriel took on the responsibility of wearing the captain’s armband.

This gesture was seen as a symbolic representation of Gabriel’s significant influence throughout the season.

It is worth noting that Gabriel has been a consistent presence in Arsenal’s starting lineup, featuring in all 36 Premier League matches this season, highlighting his crucial role under Mikel Arteta.

It seems that in the absence of Martin Odegaard and vice captains Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Jesus during the match, Gabriel was the next in line to don the captain’s armband for Arsenal.

This decision holds potential significance, especially considering that Kieran Tierney, who has previously served as captain, was on the pitch but seemingly relieved of his duties. It could be interpreted as a hint towards Gabriel’s future role at the club, particularly considering the rumors surrounding Xhaka’s potential departure in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Throughout the season, Gabriel has frequently formed a defensive partnership with William Saliba, but unfortunately, Saliba’s progress has been hindered by a back injury.

According to The Athletic, Saliba is expected to miss the remainder of the campaign, along with Oleksandr Zinchenko, who suffered a calf issue during the match against Newcastle.
