Gabriel Jesus appears to disagree with Mikel Arteta over Arsenal manager’s injury claim
Gabriel Jesus has downplayed the extent of his injury during Arsenal’s victory against Sevilla on Tuesday evening, asserting that he would never request to be substituted, despite Manager Mikel Arteta claiming he had requested a substitution.
The Gunners had an outstanding evening in Seville, reclaiming the top spot in their Champions League group with a 2-1 victory.
Gabriel Jesus played a pivotal role in this triumph, first assisting Gabriel Martinelli for Arsenal’s opening goal with a remarkable turn and then scoring an exceptional solo goal shortly after the second half began.
However, late in the game, as Sevilla pulled a goal back and Arsenal had to defend resolutely, Jesus sustained a hamstring injury while contesting a loose ball, leading to his substitution.
Following the match, Arteta seemed notably concerned because Gabriel Jesus had promptly requested to be substituted, an unusual occurrence for the typically tireless forward.
“He asked straight away to be subbed, which is not good news because Gabi is not a player who does that at all,” Arteta told TNT Sports.
However, Gabriel Jesus has now indicated that it was Mikel Arteta’s decision to substitute him, but he emphasized his respect for his manager’s choices.
He also seemed rather positive about the injury, even hinting that it might not be a serious concern.
When asked about the potential seriousness of his injury, a smiling Gabriel Jesus, who was named Man of the Match for his performance, told reporters, “Well, let’s wait and see.”
“‘Exhausted? Yeah I was tired to be honest. But I never want to go out, you know?
“Obviously I always respect what the manager decides but it was not the case, unluckily, unfortunately. But let’s see what it [the injury] is.”
Expressing even greater optimism about the injury, Jesus conveyed to TNT Sports: “I did some tests with the physio, looks not that big. But let’s see. I have a scan the next days, maybe tomorrow or the day after, let’s see how it is. But I’m pretty sure it will be nothing.”
Arteta showered Gabriel Jesus with praise for his performance in the victory over Sevilla and believes he truly elevated his game at a crucial moment for the Gunners.
“He came here for a reason. I think he changed our world,” said the Spanish coach.
“He brought so much belief and energy to that team, he needs to step in in those moments. He’s done that. That’s when a player becomes accountable for the team.
“We need those players to win games. If you want to play Manchester City, then go to Stamford Bridge, then come here – that’s the level we’re at right now. To come here and win, big credit to the boys.”
