Gabriel Martinelli aims dig at Trent Alexander-Arnold after Liverpool defeat to Arsenal

Gabriel Martinelli has indicated that Arsenal focused on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool’s right flank during their victory at the Emirates on Sunday.

In a highly anticipated Premier League match, Jurgen Klopp’s team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal, narrowing their lead at the top of the table. Arsenal now trail Liverpool by just two points, with Manchester City having a game in hand.

Although Alexander-Arnold is widely praised for his attacking prowess, there have been lingering concerns about his defensive capabilities. Observers of the match may not have seen those doubts dispelled over the weekend.

After the match, Martinelli said: “We knew that was the area of the pitch that we could get something from. Me personally I always do well against Liverpool.”

Alexander-Arnold faced the challenge of containing Martinelli but struggled to do so effectively. The Brazilian forward delivered what could be considered his most outstanding performance of the season, netting Arsenal’s second goal.

Martinelli has now scored five goals against Liverpool for Arsenal, matching Crystal Palace as the opposition side against which he has scored the most goals. This statistic partly explains Klopp’s admiration for him.

Klopp once dubbed Martinelli the “talent of the century” following a brace he scored at Anfield. Additionally, before a match at the Emirates last season, Klopp praised the 22-year-old, stating, “Martinelli, from the beginning, I was impressed with him. He has developed into precisely the player I anticipated. He deserves all the success he’s achieving.”

Despite joining Arsenal in the summer of 2019 and scoring 15 goals last season, Martinelli has faced challenges in the current campaign. Many expected him to surpass his goal tally from last season.
