Gabriel Martinelli could enrage Liverpool fans by setting new Premier League record vs West Ham
Gabriel Martinelli could irritate Liverpool if he sets a new Premier League record during Arsenal’s weekend match against West Ham.
This past weekend, Manchester City gained momentum in the title race after league leaders Arsenal blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield.
Arsenal, who have not won away at Liverpool since 2012, missed out on the chance to extend their lead to eight points atop the Premier League standings.
While the Gunners still hold a six-point lead over City in the Premier League standings, Pep Guardiola’s men have a game in hand and are still scheduled to host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium at the end of April.
Though Mikel Arteta’s squad may have one eye on the top-of-the-table clash with City, they will focus on the weekend’s match against West Ham.
Martinelli will be looking forward to Sunday in particular, as he is on the verge of setting a new Premier League record.
Against West Ham, Martinelli can surpass Roberto Firmino as the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season.
Should the 21-year-old Arsenal winger score twice against the Irons, he will surpass Firmino’s record of 15 goals set during the 2017-2018 campaign.
Martinelli currently has 14 Premier League goals, a total that has previously been matched by two of his compatriots.
Gabriel Jesus scored 14 goals for City during the 2019-2020 season, while Robinho scored 14 goals for the Sky Blues during the 2008-2009 season.
Martinelli has been a standout performer for Arsenal this season, earning praise from club legend Ray Parlour following the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
He was different class,” Parlour said on Premier League Productions.
“I did think that would be an area Arsenal could get some joy.
“We know Trent can be vulnerable and Martinelli took advantage of that. He picked out Jesus brilliantly for the second goal. Martinelli is a livewire, we all know that.”
