How Arsenal and Man City could face Premier League title play-off after season concludes
With only two months remaining in the Premier League season, the competition for the title is becoming more intense.
Arsenal is currently in the lead, eight points ahead of Manchester City, but City has a game in hand. Arsenal has nine games left to play while City has ten, and there is a possibility that they could face each other in a playoff to determine the winner of the championship.
If they finish with the same points, goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head record, a neutral ground will host the playoff. According to a statement made by the Premier League in 2020, head-to-head records will now be used to break any ties in the table for the title, European qualification, or relegation.
“In previous seasons, teams involved in these specific battles who finished with the same points total, goal difference and number of goals scored would be pitted against each other in a playoff. But that extra match is now less likely.
“Only if the clubs remain level in the table after this will a playoff be arranged, at a neutral ground, with the format, timing and venue being determined by the Premier League Board.” City will welcome Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium later this month having won 3-1 at the Emirates back in February.
This means that if the Gunners win 3-1 in Manchester and finish tied on points, goal difference, and goals scored, there will be a championship-deciding play-off match at the end of the season.
Obviously, other results would need to go a certain way, but there is a possibility that a 39th game would be played, which would be a dramatic turn of events.
