Jamie Carragher delivers honest verdict on whether Arsenal will finish above Spurs
Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has offered his opinion on which team, between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, will achieve a higher position in the Premier League standings this season.
As intense local rivals, both clubs are eager to outperform each other in the ongoing campaign.
In a previous encounter at the Emirates Stadium this season, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur played to a thrilling 2-2 draw. Both clubs have reason to be content with their performances in the first half of the campaign.
Under the guidance of new manager Ange Postecoglou, Spurs have experienced a resurgence. On the other hand, Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to the top of the table by Christmas Day. However, a recent dip in form has caused the Gunners to lose ground in the title race and slide down a few places in the standings.
As of now, Arsenal occupies the fourth spot, sharing the same points as fifth-place Spurs, although the Gunners have a game in hand. This has set the stage for a direct competition between the two North London rivals. Despite recent setbacks, Arsenal remains optimistic about their title aspirations and aims to distance themselves from Spurs in the coming weeks.
For Tottenham, the focus is on securing a return to Champions League football. Nevertheless, Postecoglou is aware of the significance of finishing ahead of Arsenal for the club’s supporters when the season concludes.
Will Arsenal finish above Spurs?
Jamie Carragher has now offered his forecast on which of the two clubs, Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur, will ultimately have the satisfaction of claiming superiority over the other by the conclusion of the season.
Speaking on Stick to Football, he said, “I don’t see Tottenham finishing above Liverpool or Arsenal. I don’t see that. I think Tottenham will be battling with Aston Villa for top four or five this season.”
At the beginning of the season, Arsenal were clearly the favorites to finish ahead of Spurs. However, the current situation has put significant pressure on them to live up to that expectation.
Despite this, Mikel Arteta is currently more concerned with reversing his team’s declining form and re-entering the title race.
Gary Neville, a fellow pundit alongside Jamie Carragher, had initially backed Arsenal for the title this season. While that objective is still within reach for the Gunners, it is crucial for them to return to winning ways in their upcoming match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Failing to do so would undoubtedly raise concerns and prompt a sense of urgency for Arsenal.
