Kai Havertz of Arsenal both scored a goal and conceded a penalty in a surprising turn of events while playing in the left-back position for the German national team.

Germany suffered a 3-2 defeat to Turkey in a friendly on Saturday night, highlighting their troubled preparations for hosting Euro 2024.

Despite it being the first home game for the new manager, Julian Nagelsmann, the focal point of discussion centered around Kai Havertz’s position on the field.

The versatile attacking midfielder, who has played in various roles throughout his career, including No.10, false-nine, striker, and right-winger, had most recently been utilized by Mikel Arteta in a deeper midfield role as a No.8.

At the age of 24, Kai Havertz can now include another position on his resume: left-back in a back four, alongside his former Chelsea teammate Antonio Rudiger.

While this decision seemed truly unconventional, it appears that it may not be a recurring theme in the future, as indicated by Nagelsmann.

Speaking to RTL before the match, the German manager stated, “Kai won’t always be in this position.”

“I have a great idea, he’s an exceptionally good footballer. This is a very good option. He won’t always play as a classic left-back.”

Initially, the tactical decision seemed to be a stroke of genius, as Havertz successfully scored a goal just five minutes into the game, assisted by Leroy Sane.

However, any premature excitement for this strategic move should be tempered, as Turkey managed to overturn the scoreline, leading 2-1 at half-time. Germany later equalized shortly after the break.

Despite starting the game as a hero with an early goal, Havertz’s role took a downturn as he ended up being the villain, conceding a penalty by handling the ball inside the box.

The visitors capitalized on the subsequent spot-kick, securing the winning goal. Germany is set for another match on Tuesday night against Austria, leaving anticipation for what Nagelsmann has planned for Havertz.

Following the international break, Arsenal faces Brentford next Saturday evening, and considering Havertz’s limited offensive impact this season, Arteta might be tempted to consider deploying his £65 million star in a defensive role.
