Liverpool may block next signing Arsenal want to make after Ivan Toney in January

Liverpool might thwart Arsenal’s attempts to acquire Pedro Neto in the January transfer window by employing a well-known strategy.

Both Premier League teams have shown interest in the Wolves winger, who has made an impressive comeback after a prolonged absence due to a severe knee injury.

Neto faced a gradual return to action last season but encountered another setback, sidelining him for a significant portion of the campaign due to an ankle issue.

His noteworthy performance of five assists and a goal in his initial eight Premier League matches this season has piqued the interest of top European clubs.

Before suffering an ACL injury at the end of the 2020-21 season, the Portuguese star was previously linked with Arsenal.

Despite Bukayo Saka’s impressive performances on the right wing for the Gunners, they might revive their interest in Neto.

However, there are reports suggesting that Liverpool might also enter the race for the 23-year-old if he continues to impress.

The Reds might consider making Neto one of their typical January acquisitions, potentially in preparation for the potential departure of Mohamed Salah the following summer.

According to a report from Caught Offside, there are individuals within the Liverpool management who have a strong admiration for Pedro Neto.

If Mohamed Salah were to depart, this admiration might prompt Liverpool to leap ahead of Arsenal and make a move for the former Braga prospect.

Liverpool has a track record of proactively replacing key players approximately six months before they officially leave the club.

For instance, in 2020, Takumi Minamino was brought in during the January transfer window, and this strategic signing occurred around six months before fringe forwards Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings made their departures from Anfield.

Two years later, Liverpool continued their pattern of signing replacements in advance. They acquired Luis Diaz with the intention of securing an early replacement for Sadio Mane, who ultimately departed for Bayern Munich in the summer.

This pattern was repeated a year later when Cody Gakpo was signed in the early days of 2023, anticipating the impending departure of Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool may opt to repeat their strategy in January, especially considering the strong links between Mohamed Salah and a move to Saudi Arabia.

While it may not materialize during the winter transfer window, there is a chance that Liverpool could face difficulties in retaining their best player for the 2024-25 season.

Pedro Neto, with his left-footed prowess on the right wing, knack for scoring and creating goals, could serve as an ideal long-term replacement for the Egyptian forward. Liverpool might outmaneuver Arsenal by planning a significant January transfer.

Arsenal, on the other hand, appears to be prioritizing the acquisition of a new striker ahead of the winter transfer window, with Ivan Toney being linked to the North London club, and his suspension set to conclude on January 16. This potential move could open the door for Liverpool to secure the signing of Neto.
