Mauricio Pochettino quickly clarifies VAR rant after Mikel Arteta outburst

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino clarified that he wasn’t targeting Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta when discussing VAR in a passionate manner.

The focus returned to officiating as Chelsea disrupted Tottenham’s undefeated streak on Monday night with a highly disorderly 4-1 victory.

VAR was unusually active during the game as Spurs concluded the match with only nine players, and a total of five goals were invalidated. This occurred following a heated reaction from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who expressed strong dissatisfaction with Premier League refereeing after Newcastle secured a contentious winning goal against Arsenal on Saturday.

Arteta strongly criticized the officials, branding them an embarrassing disgrace, and expressed feeling ashamed to be associated with English football. Arsenal subsequently released an official statement in support of Arteta’s sentiments the following day.

When questioned about VAR after the match, Pochettino remarked, “Too many coaches were in favor of VAR.”

“Then when it’s against you… ah, it’s a disgrace! It’s difficult.

“I’m not talking about Arteta.”

In contrast, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou seemed to be specifically referring to Arteta in his comments during the post-match press conference.

“Premier League managers should just manage their football clubs,” he said.

“I’ve never and I never will talk to referees about the rules of the game. I was taught that you grow up and you respect the officials.

“Now, managers look for ways to bend the rules. Tell me what the rule is, and I guarantee you will have a room full of managers processing ‘how can I get around this’.

“What I want are the best officials always being upskilled to officiate the game but it’s so hard for referees to officiate these days. Their authority is constantly getting diminished.”
