Midfielder released by Arsenal announce retirement from the professional game
Mana Iwabuchi has declared the end of her professional career, a decision made in the wake of a season that included a loan stint at Tottenham Hotspur and her omission from the Japan Women’s World Cup team.
Mana Iwabuchi, who initially transferred to Arsenal from Aston Villa in May 2021, made 28 appearances for the Gunners and scored six goals during her time with the club.
Her standout moment came in Arsenal’s emphatic 9-1 victory over FC Zurich in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where she delivered a memorable performance.
Iwabuchi went on loan to Tottenham Hotspur, and though her time there wasn’t as successful, it added an interesting twist to her diverse career journey.
Iwabuchi’s performance became a subject of heated discussion among fans, leading to a divided atmosphere. Even though she didn’t manage to score a goal or provide an assist in her ten appearances for Spurs, her reputation in her home country remains untarnished.
The Japan Women’s World Cup snub
Adding further complexity to her story, Iwabuchi was notably excluded from the Japan squad for the Women’s World Cup.
This marked the first instance of her being left out since her debut for the national team in 2010, despite a track record of significant contributions, including winning the 2011 Women’s World Cup and earning a silver Olympic medal in 2012.
It’s possible that this omission played a role in her ultimate decision to retire from professional football.
A heartfelt farewell
Posting on social media, Iwabuchi conveyed her feelings: “To all the people supporting me, what is on my mind now is the gratitude to every single thing I experienced through this game – the support, encouragement, fighting together, the scenes, excitement, creativity – and I feel so grateful to all of you who were with me.
“I love football, I love the people I met in football, and I have loved my football career.
“Thank you so much for everything.”
