Mikel Arteta makes it very clear who’s to blame for Arsenal throwing away title

Mikel Arteta appears to hold himself accountable for Arsenal’s failure to win the title, following their 3-0 loss to Brighton at the Emirates, which effectively handed Manchester City the championship.

Brighton outplayed Arsenal tactically and physically, pressuring and causing their opponents to make frequent errors, while also demonstrating a level of composure on the ball that Arsenal appeared to lack.

Arteta expressed his disappointment openly after the match, admitting that team morale was low. During an interview with Sky Sports, the Spaniard stated that he felt responsible for the outcome.

“I hate the feeling of letting people down when they’re really expecting something. That’s the biggest regret I have today.”

He also went on to dissect how quickly emotions can be flipped on their head, adding: “A week ago, I was standing here feeling proud and today we have to apologise for the performance in the second half. It was not acceptable.

“Mathematically, it’s still possible, but today it’s impossible to think about it. We need to digest the result and the performance in the second half, understand why and have a different reaction.”

It could be said that Arsenal’s performance against Brighton was their poorest of the season, and they were outplayed by the Seagulls right from the start of the match.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard echoed the sentiments of his manager come the full-time whistle, as he explained: “It looks difficult, to be honest, we have to be realistic, I don’t think City are going to make many mistakes now.

“The only thing we can do now is get back and finish the season in a good way, I think everyone deserves that, especially the fans. That’s the only thing we can do and we’ll have to see.

“We’ve done a lot of good things [this season], but at the moment it’s just disappointing the way we ended. Especially the three games before the Chelsea game, and then this game today.”
