Mikel Arteta warned of Arsenal ‘experiment’ that ‘won’t happen’ again after team’s tinkering

Gary Neville believes that Mikel Arteta has finally settled on his Arsenal lineup.

The Gunners secured a significant victory over Manchester City, marking their first win against the Premier League champions in 12 attempts.

Gabriel Martinelli’s late shot, which deflected off Nathan Ake, secured three crucial points for Arteta’s team, placing them just behind early League leaders and arch-rivals Tottenham, with the only difference being goal difference.

While the club has had an excellent start to the season, Arteta initially deviated from the system that served Arsenal well the previous year.

Defender Gabriel Magalhaes was omitted from the starting lineup at the beginning of the campaign, and several other center-backs were deployed at left-back in the absence of Oleksandr Zinchenko.

In Arteta’s quest to incorporate summer signings Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, Thomas Partey was even utilized as a right-back.

Nevertheless, Gary Neville now feels that the Arsenal manager has finally found a winning combination, with Gabriel and William Saliba playing pivotal roles in keeping Manchester City’s attack at bay during their recent match on Sunday.

“They have to keep Rice fit, the idea of not playing Gabriel Magalhaes at the start of the season was an experiment that won’t happen again,” he said to Sky Sports.

“Those two centre-halves – Gabriel and William Saliba – were pivotal against City, they were outstanding playing against the best player in the world in that position [Erling Haaland].”
