Pep Guardiola defends Mikel Arteta VAR rant with ‘confusion’ claim following Newcastle vs Arsenal controversy

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has acknowledged the widespread confusion regarding officiating in football, particularly in the context of VAR and PGMOL coming under criticism once more.

This past weekend, controversy arose when Manchester United had a goal disallowed in their match against Fulham.

VAR faced further scrutiny as Sheffield United received a penalty against Wolves for what seemed like minimal contact from Fabio Silva.

The Premier League’s officiating suffered another blow as Arsenal experienced their first league defeat of the season against Newcastle.

Anthony Gordon’s goal made the difference after three VAR reviews. The first check was to confirm if the ball had gone out of play, the second to assess a possible foul on Gabriel Magalhaes, and the third to ensure Gordon was not in an offside position.

VAR’s choice not to overturn the goal led to an intense reaction from Mikel Arteta, who went on a passionate tirade in the St James’ Park media room.

“We have to talk about the result because you have to talk about how the hell this goal stand ups and it’s incredible,” said the Arsenal boss. “I feel embarrassed but I have to be the one now coming here to try to defend the club and please ask for help, because it’s an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed; it’s an absolute disgrace.”

“Because it’s not a goal for many reasons; it’s not a goal, for more than one reason at least,” Arteta replied. “It’s not a goal and it’s too much at stake here. We put in so much effort, it’s so difficult to compete at this level, and it’s an absolute disgrace.

“Again, I feel embarrassed having more than 20 years in this country, and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world. I am sorry.”

Once more, discussions surrounding VAR have taken center stage in the headlines following another weekend of Premier League matches.

Guardiola has joined the conversation, expressing his views on the matter during his press conference before Manchester City’s upcoming Champions League match against Young Boys.

“I have the feeling in every country there is confusion about things,” the Man City boss said. “Emotions after the game feelings are so high. It’s difficult to handle it – I’m talking about me, not Mikel Arteta or any other manager.

“We cannot talk to the fourth officials, we cannot do anything. It didn’t change much from last season.”

Guardiola was then asked whether VAR is getting worse, he replied: “I don’t know, it is such a sensitive issue right now. What happened in many games. It’s difficult for the referee and us too.”
