Piers Morgan slams Mikel Arteta for ‘humiliating’ Aaron Ramsdale after what happened in Arsenal vs Everton clash

Piers Morgan slams Mikel Arteta ‘humiliating’ Aaron Ramsdale after what happened in Arsenal vs Everton clash

Piers Morgan has claimed that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has subjected the team’s primary goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, to a sense of embarrassment by choosing David Raya, a recent summer acquisition, to start in the match against Everton.

Raya, who had not previously been in the starting lineup for Arsenal, got the nod ahead of Aaron Ramsdale during their visit to Goodison Park.

Before the match, the outspoken television host and journalist expressed his opinion on the matter on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter: “I don’t understand what Ramsdale has done to deserve being dropped?Havertz, yes.. but Ramsdale’s been consistently superb for us. Why humiliate him?”

Numerous individuals also turned to X to voice their opinions regarding Arteta’s decision, with a significant number suggesting that it was a strategic choice in preparation for Arsenal’s upcoming Champions League showdown against PSV on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Kai Havertz, another recent addition to the team, found himself excluded from the starting lineup despite providing an assist during his international duty with Germany in their victory over France in a friendly match. Fabio Vieira took his place in the lineup for the match against Everton.

Mikel Arteta also chose to maintain Eddie Nketiah as his starting forward, while Gabriel Jesus, the marquee signing from the previous season, was named among the substitutes.

These alterations in the lineup occurred in the wake of a week where Arsenal’s manager clarified that he had to get involved in training sessions due to the club having an abundance of available players. The 41-year-old took part in training matches this week as a temporary measure.

Arteta’s choice to acquire a new goalkeeper during the summer raised questions, especially considering that Raya was unlikely to serve as a conventional backup due to his strong reputation, earned through impressive performances in consecutive Premier League seasons with Brentford.

When questioned before the game, Arteta declined to confirm whether this change indicated his preference for the starting goalkeeper in the future.
Ramsdale had solidified his position as the primary goalkeeper for Arsenal since his transfer from Sheffield United in 2021 and was commonly seen as the first-choice backup for Jordan Pickford, England’s starting goalkeeper.

The former Brentford goalkeeper arrived at Arsenal this summer with the intent of challenging Ramsdale for the club’s top goalkeeper position. His competitive debut marked the first occasion since March 2022 that Ramsdale did not commence a Premier League match.
