Player’s agent gives update on contract situation of midfielder’s future at Arsenal

The representative of Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has disclosed that discussions regarding a contract extension with the Gunners have come to a halt.

Jorginho, who joined Mikel Arteta’s team from Chelsea in January on a one-and-a-half-year deal lasting until the summer of 2024, has played 30 games for Arsenal in various competitions this season, featuring in eight starting lineups and six substitute appearances.

Although Arteta considers the Italian player an important squad member, uncertainties surround Jorginho’s future at the Emirates Stadium, especially with the approaching New Year allowing him to engage in pre-contract talks with foreign clubs.

Despite the lack of ongoing negotiations, Jorginho expressed contentment with his current situation at Arsenal last month, stating that he is “really happy” and has no worries about his future with the club.

Earlier this month, the ex-Napoli and Hellas Verona midfielder acknowledged the possibility of a return to Serie A, casting uncertainty on his future with Arsenal.

Jorginho’s agent, Joao Santos, has now given an update on his client’s situation and has established a deadline for Arsenal to engage in negotiations for a contract extension.

Asked whether Jorginho will renew his contract during an interview with TUTTOmercatoWEB, Santos said: “Everything is at a standstill.

“We’ll think about it after February. However, the priority remains Arsenal.”

Arsenal reportedly have the option to prolong Jorginho’s contract for an additional 12 months, extending it until the summer of 2025.

This clause could be activated if the Gunners decide to maintain their squad depth by retaining the midfielder.

Jorginho is among several Arsenal midfielders facing an uncertain future at the club, including Thomas Partey, who, due to injury concerns, might be allowed to depart in January, as per a report. Mohamed Elneny shares a similar predicament to Jorginho, with his contract set to expire in June 2024. Meanwhile, players like Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira have found it challenging to secure regular first-team football under Arteta.

Arsenal made significant midfield additions last summer with the acquisitions of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, both of whom have been regular fixtures alongside captain Martin Odegaard.

Despite this, former Gunners midfielder Gilberto Silva recently disclosed that Arteta’s team is seeking to enhance their midfield options in the upcoming January transfer window.

Various players, including Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa, Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal, Andre from Fluminense, and Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City, have been rumored to be potential targets for Arsenal in recent weeks.
