Report: Arsenal leading race for Red Bull Salzburg’s Oscar Gloukh

Arsenal is reportedly leading the race to acquire the services of Oscar Gloukh, the Red Bull Salzburg forward, in 2024. The 19-year-old gained widespread recognition during the previous year’s Under-19 European Championships, where he scored three goals and provided two assists, despite Israel’s loss to England in the final.

Following his standout performance, Gloukh earned a place in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament and secured a transfer from Maccabi Tel Aviv to Salzburg in January.

The Austrian club, known for nurturing young talent, secured the playmaker for a fee of just €7m (£6.1m). Gloukh quickly made an impact, winning the top-flight title in his first half-season.

In the current 2023-24 season, Gloukh has showcased his skills with four goals and four assists in 20 matches across various competitions.

His notable performances in the Champions League, including goals against Benfica and Inter Milan, have further elevated his profile.

Having made a mark in Israel’s youth teams, the emerging talent born in 2004 has earned three caps for the senior national squad, notably scoring against Cyprus, Romania, and Belarus, the latter two goals coming in Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Although Oscar Gloukh is under contract with Red Bull Salzburg until the conclusion of the 2026-27 season, his consistent development has naturally sparked interest from higher-profile European clubs.

Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal have all been mentioned as contenders for the midfielder’s signature, with reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes indicating that Arsenal is currently in the lead.

Under the management of Mikel Arteta, Arsenal has seen success in integrating academy products like Bukayo Saka, Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah, and Emile Smith Rowe into the first team.

Arteta’s handling of William Saliba has also received praise. If the reports hold true, Gloukh could potentially join the ranks of high-profile young talents at Arsenal, but stiff competition is expected as other top clubs vie for the Israel playmaker’s services in the summer of 2024.

Reports suggest that La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have been closely monitoring Oscar Gloukh’s performances, and the player has expressed a desire to represent Real Madrid in the future. However, Real Madrid’s current squad includes Jude Bellingham, Brahim Diaz, and Arda Guler in the number 10 role, with Bellingham and Guler being recent acquisitions.

Arsenal, on the other hand, is facing challenges in terms of cover for captain and number 10 Martin Odegaard, who has been sidelined with a hip injury for three consecutive games. With ongoing injury issues for players like Smith Rowe and inconsistencies from Vieira, Arsenal’s options for natural cover in the attacking midfield role are limited.

To address this gap, Arsenal has relied on Kai Havertz, a £65m summer signing from Chelsea, to fill Odegaard’s position.

However, Havertz’s performances have reportedly fallen short of expectations, with only one goal and one assist in his first 19 games. Despite Vieira’s recent red card in a match against Burnley, Arsenal secured a 3-1 victory, propelling them to second place in the Premier League table ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.
