‘Very strange’ – Mikel Arteta delivers his verdict on Chelsea’s opening goal against Arsenal after Mykhailo Mudryk embarrasses David Raya
Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, expressed his surprise at the unusual sight of goalkeeper David Raya conceding a goal from Mykhailo Mudryk’s shot during the match against Chelsea.
Raya found himself in an awkward position when Mudryk’s shot from just outside the penalty area sailed past him and found the back of the net, extending Chelsea’s lead to 2-0 in the Premier League match.
Raya’s embarrassment was alleviated when Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, committed an even more significant mistake, gifting the ball directly to Declan Rice, who subsequently capitalized by scoring against him.
Following this, Leandro Trossard added another goal for the away team, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
Arteta conceded he was somewhat confused by Mykhailo’s goal, telling reporters: “I haven’t seen it live again, we looked at it from the angle, it’s a very strange angle to concede from. I didn’t know if it was a deflection or the trajectory of the ball.”
He added to Arsenal’s website: “Even though we conceded in a situation like the goal of Mudryk, we kept going and they did exactly what we asked of them, that you never give up and we continued to go and go. We should have scored a goal earlier, we didn’t, but the team was always there to fight until the end. In the end, we got a point after a really difficult result and the way it started.”
Arsenal will shift their attention to their upcoming fixture in the Champions League, where they will face Sevilla on Tuesday.
