What Bruno Guimaraes did to Bukayo Saka to spark fury on Arsenal bench
On Sunday, Arsenal maintained their push for the top spot in the Premier League by delivering a noteworthy performance in the first half against Newcastle.
The Gunners quickly took the lead at St James’ Park, courtesy of Martin Odegaard’s 15th league goal of the season from a long-range shot.
The goal came shortly after Newcastle’s penalty was cancelled by VAR, which revealed that the ball had bounced off Jakub Kiwior’s thigh before hitting his arm.
During the first half of the game, Mikel Arteta’s team performed better than their opponents and had several excellent opportunities to increase their lead. Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka missed clear chances, and in injury time, Martin Odegaard was unable to score past Nick Pope.
Nonetheless, Arsenal had some concerns during the game. The team’s coaching staff were extremely angry with referee Chris Kavanagh for not booking Bruno Guimaraes following his terrible tackle on Bukayo Saka.
Guimaraes, a Brazilian player, lunged into a challenge on Saka from behind and dragged his boot down Saka’s Achilles.
Despite his actions, Guimaraes and several Newcastle players were not shown a yellow card, which infuriated the Arsenal dugout.
Newcastle got lucky in the first half as they did not receive a single booking, even though Fabian Schar made two consecutive tackles on Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka but escaped punishment.
